Stop a cough with no medicines

The most common health issue is the cough. Science name for this is tussis and this is a reflex for clearing the throat and removing items that block the air tracts. This is basically the body’s way of removing foreign particles, microbes and irritants of the respiratory paths.

This is caused by viruses or colds. Also due to smoking and tuberculosis, lung cancer or asthma.

Having cough drops can soothe this a bit or taking a syrup, but the pain and discomfort is still there. If the cough drops are tasty, it is a good therapy!

But, any such cure has its troubles too. the market drops for cough have additives, preservatives and colors. And of course, there is not time for you to make them.

Here are some effective simple remedies you can use:

  1. Vicks on the feet

                                                                                                                                                                                                           Put a bit vicks on the palms and rub this on the feet before sleep. Put on socks and wear them for the night. Do this for 4 days and be relieved. Vicks has menthol, camphor and eucalyptus both great for congestion and coughing. Also apply it on the chest for the cough. Vicks is not safe for kids under 4.

  2. Ginger, honey and lemon tea

    You need: 4 pieces ginger, 1 tbsp honey, ½ lemon, 1 cup water. Boil the ginger and water.Ginger is analgesic and soothes irritation in the throat. Also it kills inflammation and breaks down mucus of the lungs. Put the 1 cup water and turn on heat. Add the ginger and let this boil. Simmer it and infuse it for 5 min. strain the liquid and separate the ginger pieces. Add 1 tbsp honey and the lemon juice and have this tea 4 times daily. Honey is more than sugar of nature it also removes mucus and irritation.

  3. ACV and honey 

    You need 2 tbsp ACV, 1 tbsp honey and water. Mix the acv and honey in the water and mix. Have this daily. ACV balances the pH and honey stops congestion in the membranes. Add cayenne or cinnamon for more healing and aroma.

  4. DIY cough syrup

    You need: 1 tsp turmeric, 7 cinnamon sticks, 1 tbsp honey, pinch cayenne, 1 cup water. Put the water in the pan and turn heat on. Add the cinnamon, turmeric and cayenne and let this boil. The turmeric and cinnamon have antioxidants and kill bacteria, fungi and inflammation too, thus congestion is relieved. Also the cayenne removes congestion that makes sputum and improves the blood flow. After it boils, turn off heat and let it infuse for 2 min. strain this and put it in bottle. Warm up 2 tbsp of this for a cough and add honey. Have this 2 times daily. The honey smoothens mucus and loosens it and keeps membranes soothed too. The heating though kills the healing benefits in the honey, so add it AFTER you warm up the liquid.

  5. Herbal tea- Thyme tea.

    You need: sprigs of thyme, 1 tsp honey, 1 cup water. Let the water boil. Add the thyme and turn heat down to steep this for 3 min. Thyme kills bacteria and also relaxes the muscles in the trachea and bronchi, opening the air paths. Strain this and put it in cup then add honey and have this tea 4 times daily. For licorice tea, you need: 3 roots licorice, 1 tsp honey and 1 cup water. Let the water boil and add the licorice. Licorice soothes inflammation and irritation in membranes. Strain this and add honey. Have it hot, 3 times daily.


More tips:

Have more fluids to be hydrated and remove cough. Warm drinks are good since they loosen and soften the mucus.

Avoid sodas and citrus juices since they have acids that irritate more.

Have hot showers and baths to moisture the air paths and loosen phlegm.

Cough drops are good too, they have menthol that numbs the throat and gives relief.

No eating cold foods to avoid more infections and pain.
