Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by black-legged ticks and deer ticks. Minimum 300,000 people per year are infected. It is very difficult to diagnose the Lyme disease. It can affect the nervous system, the brain, the heart, the joints and the muscles.
- A bull’ eye rash
- Joint pain
- Muscle Aches
This disease is usually treated with antibiotics but sometimes they leave the disease deep into the body. Also a recent research showed that the stevia leaf is a powerful antibacterial agent that treats Lyme disease (Borrelia Burgdorferi).
This study is conducted at the University of New Haven, West Haven, CT. The scientists proved that the stevia leaf has the ability to kill many forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi.
These bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, therefore it is very difficult to treat them but the extract from the stevia leaf was very effective.
Scientists also said that 10-20 % of the patients who suffered from Lyme disease have side effects like fatigue, muscle aches, and pain while were treated with antibiotics (2-4 weeks).
This study also showed that the leaf extract of the plant stevia has various phytochemicals and this product can be considered as an effective natural antibiotic against this pathogen.
This study is only the beginning for further studies but it shows that the stevia is an important plant against Lyme disease.
